The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre on Friday warned that low-lying coastal areas might be inundated by tidal surges due to the influences of a depression over the Bay of Bengal and the new moon.

A flood bulletin, issued by the FFWC, said that the effects of the new moon and the depression might trigger tidal surges of one-three feet above normal river-water level and flood low-lying coastal areas in Barishal, Khulna and Chattogram divisions.

Partho Protim Barua, sub-divisional engineer of the FFWC, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the water levels of the Chattogram division-based rivers Gomti, Feni, Salonia, Muhuri, Halda, Sangu and Matamuhuri would rise in the next three days while the Muhuri and Salonia rivers in Feni might cross their danger levels.

‘We have issued a warning about a potential flooding in parts of the Feni district and adjoining coastal areas,’ he said.

In the Sylhet division, the water levels of the Manu, Dhalai and Khoyai rivers rose on Friday and are expected to continue rising for the next three days.

The water levels of the Ganges and Padma rivers also increased and are expected to remain steady for the next two days.

A moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions for the next three days due to the influence of the land depression created over the Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Friday issued a notice for all maritime ports to hoist the local cautionary signal number three.

A BMD forecast issued for the next 120 hours commencing from 9:00am on Friday, said that light to moderate rain or thunderstorms accompanied by temporary gusty wind was likely to occur at most places over Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at many places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions.
