Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday claimed that a deliberate and orchestrated campaign was under way to destroy the country’s nationalist forces, commenting that the ongoing propaganda against the BNP was part of a planned conspiracy.
Speaking at a book launch at Lakeshore Hotel in Dhaka, Fakhrul said that the current wave of propaganda and misinformation was not spontaneous but the outcome of a well-planned conspiracy aimed at discrediting Tarique Rahman, the party’s emerging leader and eliminating him from the political landscape.
He was speaking at the launch of a compilation titled ‘Tarique Rahman: The Hope of Bangladesh,’ edited by Krishak Dal general secretary Shahidul Islam Babul.
Highlighting what he called a new dimension to the anti-BNP campaign, Fakhrul said that the party had now come under a serious and major attack, with cyber offensives being launched against it from all directions.
He observed that the media landscape was undergoing a shift, with social media and digital platforms now playing a key role in shaping public opinion.
Fakhrul emphasised that this had become a digital battlefield, where the BNP needed to be better prepared.
Acknowledging the party’s weakness in the field, he called on young people to undertake a more active and determined role in strengthening the party’s digital presence.
‘One of the BNP’s biggest weaknesses is our reluctance to study and get engaged intellectually. I do not know whether others will admit it, but we must change this attitude,’ Fakhrul said.
He said that there was no alternative to merit, adding that the party must advance placing talent and knowledge at the forefront.
The event was presided over by the BNP chair’s advisory council member Ismail Zabihullah.
The speakers included Professor Mahbub Ullah, Morshed Hasan Khan, political analyst Zahed Ur Rahman, BNP acting chair’s adviser Mahdi Amin, and Dean of the Dental Faculty at Bangladesh Medical University Shakhawat Hossain Sayantha.
