A 55-year-old man was killed in a clash between two groups of villagers over a football match at Kulshur village under Kalia in Narail on Friday night.

The deceased, Zillur Rahman Sardar, 55, was a resident of the Kulshur village.


People of the area said that a football match was organised at Eklas Uddin Secondary High School ground on Friday afternoon.

There had been long standing enmity between Sheikh Family of Babupur village and Molla Family of Panch Kaunia village over the occupation of the ground.

During the match, the supporters of both locked into an altercation after both groups entered the field, triggering a clash.

At one stage, the supporters of Sheikh Family beat a supporter of Molla Family identified as Jitu, leaving him injured.

Angered by the incident, the supporters of Sheikh Family swooped on the house of Mujibur Rahman Sardar, president of Kalia municipality unit Awami League, and stabbed Zillur Rahman, cousin of Mujibur, indiscriminately, leaving him injured.

Later, he was taken to Kalia Upazila Health Complex from where he was shifted to Khulna Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 7:30pm.

Abdullah Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Kalia police station, said that efforts were on to arrest the attackers.
