A group of unidentified assailants on Friday shot and hacked a former leader of Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, near his house in the Mahasharpasha pashchimpara area under Daulatpur police station in Khulna city.
The deceased, Mahbubur Rahman Molla, 42, is a former vice-president of the Daulatpur thana unit of Juba Dal.
Daulatpur police station officer-in-charge Mir Atahar Ali said that three assailants, wearing helmets, fired several gunshots at Mahbubur when he stepped out of his home at about 1:30pm to say Jumma prayers at a nearby mosque.
As he collapsed, the attackers hacked him and cut his tendons before leaving the victim in a pool of blood on the spot.
The locals rescued him and rushed him to Khulna Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Atahar added that Mahbubur鈥檚 body was kept at the KMCH mortuary for post-mortem examination.聽
He said that they recovered four bullet casings from the spot.
He said that they were conducting drives to arrest the killers.
Mahbub came to public attention on February 18 this year during a clash between students and political activists at the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, when a photo of him brandishing a machete went viral.
He was expelled from the party later that night but continued participating in political activities.
