Politicians, academics, labour leaders and professionals on Monday at a human chain in Dhaka called on the interim government to regularise jobs of 10,000 workers of 4,578 Union Digital Centres across the country.

Bangladesh Union Digital Centre Kalyan Samiti formed the human chain in front of the National Press Club presided over by acting president of the organisation, Rafiqul Islam.

Zonayed Saki, chief coordinator of the Ganosamhati Andolan, called on the interim government to refrain from making 10,000 workers of 4578 union digital centres jobless as the trained persons could be used to collect information about those living in villages.

‘If we want to digitise our country, we must use 10,000 people for collecting information about villages,’ Saki said.

Although the fascist Awami League government introduced the centres, they did not use those, Saki said.

Saki called on the interim government to issue appointment letters to the workers and regularise their jobs.

Academic and local government expert Tofail Ahmed said that for strengthening the local government these trained workers at union parishads should not dropped from their jobs.

Labour leader Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed called on the interim government to stop repression on the jobless people who were waging movements.

General secretary of the organisation Mohammad Emdadul Haque, Ganosamhati central leader Dipok Roy, UDC leaders Jobaer Hossain and others were also present at the human chain.
