Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy on Saturday said that no force could prevent national elections from taking place if the BNP mobilised.
‘Elections must be held… and no one has the power to stop them if we take to the streets. To those who say we could not do anything in 16 years, I say — we can now show what we are capable of doing in just 16 days,’ he said while speaking at a rally in Keraniganj, organised by the Dhaka South unit of the BNP.
Referring to the interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’s commitment to holding elections, Gayeshwar said, ‘A gentleman has given his word. We are exercising patience with the expectation that he will honour it.’
Criticising the Jamaat-e-Islami, the BNP leader claimed that the Jamaat had taken control of the education and healthcare sectors, leaving no space for others.
‘Those who reject elections and incessantly call for reforms are agents of India. These same people are secretly recruiting Awami League’s worst elements into their party ranks,’ he alleged.
The rally, held at the premises of Shubhadya Girls’ School in Chunkutia, demanded timely reforms and prompt national elections.
Another BNP standing committee member, Salahuddin Ahmed, urged unity among democratic forces.
‘Unity is our strength. The national unity against fascism must be preserved and transformed into power. With that unity, we will build a prosperous Bangladesh — our Bangladesh-first policy must prevail,’ he said.
He cautioned against internal divisions among democratic forces, emphasising the importance of constructive disagreement when necessary.
‘We will stay united, express differences democratically when needed, and move forward together to protect our sovereignty and build a prosperous, democratic Bangladesh,’ Salahuddin added.
