The police early Friday arrested three transport workers at Kanaighat upazila in Sylhet on charges of kidnapping and raping a girl with intellectual disability.

The arrested are all from sadar union of Kanaighat—microbus driver Subhankar Das, 27, son of Nikhil Das of Umagarh village, car driver Babul Ahmed, 28, son of Farid Ahmed of Birdal Kachupara village, and pickup van driver Fahad Miah, 25, son of Babul Miah of Chatigram village, said the police.


Relatives of the victim, 16, alleged that the three man abducted her on early Wednesday from near her parents’ home and confining her in a car took her to Balurmath at Kayasthagram village in the area.

Later, they raped the victim the whole night and fled the spot leaving her in critical condition, according to the police. Local people discovered her and informed the family who rescued her, relatives of the victim said.

Kanaighat police officer-in-charge Md Abdul Awal confirmed the incident to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

He said that the victim was admitted to the One-stop Crisis Centre of Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital on Thursday afternoon after her mother filed a case with the police station in this regard.

‘We conducted a drive in the midnight past Thursday and arrested Shubhangkar, Babul and Fahad from different places in the area,’ said the OC who is also the investigation officer in the case.

He said that the arrested three admitted their involvement in the rape in police interrogation.

‘They were produced before the chief judicial magistrate court, Sylhet on Friday afternoon. The court ordered to send them to jail,’ the police officer added.
