Sylhet District Stone Traders and Workers Unity Council on Wednesday threatened to go for a indefinite transport strike from Saturday if their five-point demand, including opening stone quarries for extracting stones in manual process and withdrawal of the deputy commissioner, were not met by Friday.
The announcement made at a protest rally held at the Court Point in the city.
Sylhet City Corporation former mayor and Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson’s adviser Ariful Haque Chowdhury declared the action programme in the rally after extending his support to the Sylhet District Stone Traders and Workers Unity Council.
The rest demands are to stop disconnecting power connection of the stone crushers, harassment of truck drivers and suspend the attempt to appoint a private company to verify fitness of vehicles run on Sylhet-Tamabil and Sylhet-Bholaganj highways, the platform leaders said.Â
Ariful Haque alleged that the district administration had recently started disconnecting legal power connections to the stone crusher mills at different parts of the district without any prior notice.
It also demolished different structures along the Sylhet-Tamabil Highway at Majortila area in the city without giving any time or issuing notice to the business persons concerned, he said.Â
Terming the district deputy commissioner as ‘inefficient’, Ariful alleged that the DC was destroying the business-friendly environment of this area, and for that reason the affected businessmen demanded his withdrawal.
Claiming the demands of the business owners and workers are absolutely logical, he said, ‘If the government does not take a positive decision immediately in this regard, the economy of Sylhet will come to a standstill.’
Apart from the unit council, leaders and activists of different businesses and social organisations addressed the protest rally.
They alleged that the drives carried out in the name of ‘zero tolerance policy’ pushed the business owners and employees towards a disaster.
They claimed that if these irregularities were not stopped immediately, a transport strike would be launched from Saturday for an indefinite period.
Earlier from a press conference held on June 18, the unity council had sought immediate intervention of the chief adviser Muhammad Yunus to lift the suspension order on leasing stone quarries in the interest of the livelihood of thousands of people depended on it.
Since then, the platform has been observing different action programmes to meet the demands.
The DC Mohammad Sher Mahbub Murad told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that objections brought against him were true.
He said that the power connection to the stone crusher mills was being disconnected following the ministry’s instructions and the road and highways department started demolishing the illegal structures built in their land as part of its effort to expand the Sylhet-Tamabil Highway.
‘The government officials are discharging their duties here as part of their responsibilities. So, announcing a sudden programme demanding my removal is absolutely regrettable,’ he added.
