A group of assailants hacked and shot a cable television operator in the Purba Brahmandi area in Narsingdi district town Monday night.

The deceased is Minhajul Abedin Rizvi, 35, of Aganagar village of Amirganj union under Raipura upazila in the district.


Minhajul, an accused in eight cases, used to provide internet connections and cable television services to the subscribers in different areas of Amirganj Union, the police said.

The victim鈥檚 father Joynal Abedin filed a murder case naming 10 people, including Tayebur Rahman of Khalapara village of Amirganj union.

The police said that they arrested three people and recovered several cocktails and locally-made weapons from the spot.

Narsingdi Sadar police station officer-in-charge Emdadul Haque said that the murder took place over the control of the business of cable television service and internet connections in the area.

He said that they arrested three people in this connection.

Prime accused Tayeb is an accused in 13 cases, he said.

According to local people and the police, Rizvi and Tayebur were friends and used to run the business in different areas of the union.

At one stage, Rezvi threw Taibur out of the business and, after the fall of the Awami League regime on August 5, 2024, Tayebur removed Rezvi from the business, they said.

As Rizvi wanted to return to the business, Tayebur called him to his rented house at East Brahmandi Monday night but when Rizvi arrived, Tayebur was not there initially, they added.

When Tayebur returned home, he was locked in an altercation with Rizvi and, at one stage, Rizvi was beaten indiscriminately, and as he tried to escape, the assailants shot him multiple times.

Rizvi died on the spot, the police said.
