Movement for Justice-BMU, an organisation of Bangladesh Medical University, submitted a memorandum on Sunday to its vice-chancellor Professor Md Shahinul Alam, demanding a campus free from fascism and discrimination.
Receiving the memorandum, the BMU vice-chancellor assured the members of organisation that he would look into their demands and also sought their support in this regard, said the organisation’s convener Dr Md Shohidul Haque Rahat.
The memorandum states ‘We, working as teachers, physicians and employees of BMU, have faced torture, harassment, termination from jobs, and deprivation of rights over the past 15–16 years under the then fascist government (Awami League).’
‘Just for holding dissenting opinions, many of us were forced to resign…while, in contrast, recruitment conditions were relaxed for allies of the fascists through various committees,’ the memorandum reads.
Their demands included that no ‘allies of the then fascist regime be allowed to hold any administrative or academic positions, such as dean, chairman, course director, or emeritus professor, or be given any additional duties; nor should they be involved in any recruitment, promotion, examination processes or investigation committees; and that administrative and legal actions be taken against those involved in recruitment business, corruption, exam question paper leaks as well as cases of vandalism, arson attacks and causing injuries.’
They also demanded the cancellation of all recruitments made between 2009 and August 5, 2024, following a thorough investigation and reinstatement of those who were illegally terminated during this period with due compensations and promotions; immediate steps to upgrade grades and provide promotions where necessary for medical officers appointed between 2003 and 2006; monitoring of cases filed by BMU in the context of the July 2024 movement. Â
