A fire gutted at least 22 rooms in three houses at the Kandapara brothel in Tangail on Saturday.
The fire originated from a gas cylinder in a kitchen of the brothel at around 11:00am and soon spread to other rooms, according to officials of Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Tangail Fire Service and Civil Defence senior station officer SM Humayun Karnayen said, ‘On information, we rushed to the spot at around 11:15am, and the fire was brought under control in half an hour with the help of locals.
’Initially, we think the fire originated from a gas cylinder,’ he said, adding that an estimated loss of Tk 15 lakh has been caused while goods worth about Tk 50 lakh have been recovered.
The actual cause of the fire, however, will be known after investigation, he added.
After the fire incident, sex workers were left helpless and they sought government assistance.
Three sex workers, who asked not to be named, said that everything was burnt to ashes in the one-hour fire.
They are now worried about how they will survive the next few days, they added.
Everything they had, including the bathroom motor and the water tank, was burnt to ashes, they said, urging government assistance.
After the incident, Tangail district Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders and activists, led by district BNP general secretary Farhad Iqbal, visited the scene at around 12 noon and assured the affected workers of their cooperation.
