The National Independent Investigation Commission formed to investigate the 2009 BDR carnage said on Wednesday that fugitive Awami League presidium member Jahangir Kabir Nanak and former lawmaker for Jamalpur-3 constituency Mirza Azam provided their testimonies to the commission via email.
The commission’s president retired Major General ALM Fazlur Rahman said this while replying to a query at a press conference at the Bangladesh Reference Institute for Chemical Measurements in the capital’s Science Lab area.
The commission, formed on December 24, 2024, presented its findings at its third press conference.
In a written statement, Fazlur said that the commission found evidence suggesting that some political leaders were involved in various capacities and the verification of those information was underway.
Statements from eight political figures have been recorded, some of whom were currently in jail or abroad, he said.
Replying to a query, the commission chief said, ‘The then ruling AL leaders Mirza Azam and Jahangir Kabir Nanak submitted written statements via email.’
A total of 158 individuals have been interviewed so far, with approximately 50 more testimonies pending, said the commission chief.
He also said that efforts were underway to collect information from six foreign embassies and the office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Dhaka.
The commission urged any individual, institution, or media outlet with information related to the BDR carnage, to come forward and share relevant details.
