The interim government of Bangladesh on Thursday decided to announce August 5 as Student-People Mass Uprising Day, remembering the student-led mass uprising that forced Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government to step down on August 5, 2024.
The decision was taken at a special meeting of the advisory council held at chief adviser’s office in Tejgaon with chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in the chair.
After the meeting, cultural affairs adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki shared the information at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
The adviser said that an initial decision had been made to observe the day as a government holiday. But the final decision regarding the holiday would be made at the upcoming Advisory Council meeting on next Sunday.
He also said that the government would observe the first anniversary of the July uprising through various events to be held between July 1 and August 5 across the country.
Chief adviser’s press secretary Shafiqul Alam at the press briefing said that a committee, led by adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, was formed to announce the July proclamation.
He also expressed hope that the July proclamation would be declared by August 5.
