An inmate of Dhaka Central Jail was declared dead at the emergency unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Sunday afternoon as he was taken there in critical condition.

The victim, Saidur Rahman Sujan, 45, was former chairman of Birulia union of Savar, in the outskirts of Dhaka city.


Prison authorities claimed that he attempted suicide inside the jail, and being found out, he was immediately taken to DMCH.

Duty doctors at the hospital declared Saidur dead at about 12:30pm, said the police and prison officials. Ìý

Dhaka Central Jail senior jail super Suraiya Akter said that Saidur attempted suicide by hanging himself from the prison’s grille with a gamchha (cloth traditionally used as towel) fastened around his neck. Ìý

Prison guard Sadikul Hossain said that he along with fellow guards took the victim to DMCH as directed by the prison authorities.

‘Dhaka Medical doctors declared him dead on Sunday afternoon,’ he said.

‘The prisoner is accused in 15 cases, including those filed over the past year’s July-August mass uprising,’ Suraiya Akter also said.

DMCH police outpost in-charge Md Faruq said that Saidur’s body was kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
