
Politicians, academics and professionals at a discussion in Dhaka on Saturday said that the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2025–26 was traditional and failed to take projects for the welfare of the people in the country.Â
The Democratic Rights Committee organised the discussion at the National Press Club, which was chaired by member of the committee and former Jahangirnagar University economics professor Anu Muhammad.
Anu Muhammad said that the proposed budget placed by the interim government was traditional and was nothing but the follow up of the previous budgets.
‘Interests of the common people were not considered in the budget,’ he mentioned.
He also called on the interim government to revise the budget and increase projects for the welfare of the people dropping influences of the International Monetary Fund.
Researcher and also member of the committee Mahtab Uddin Ahmed read out the keynote at the discussion.
He said that the budget would increase sufferings of the common people to run their families.
Politician Harun Ur Rashid called on the government to increase taxes on the affluent people and decrease imposing taxes on the common people.
Engineer Kollol Mustafa demanded increasing of safety net in the budget for the welfare of the poor people.
Academics and researchers Maha Mirza said that allocations for the welfares of the workers, especially for the garment workers, must increase in the proposed budget.
Academic Golam Rosul said that interim government could introduce a pro-people budget for the welfare of the common people but they had lost the opportunity.
