A case was filed early Monday, days after a video circulated on the social media that showed three muggers brandishing machetes were snatching a bag from a man in broad daylight at Moghbazar in Dhaka city.
Confirming the matter, Hatirjheel police officer-in-charge Md Raju said that victim Abdullah filed the case against three unidentified individuals.
‘The incident occurred about a week ago, but the victim did not immediately inform the police,’ he said.
Having learned about the incident as the video went viral, the police traced the victim and encouraged him to file a case, OC Raju said.
The police, however, had yet to identify the muggers, he also said on Monday evening.
Abdullah claimed that the muggers snatched his mobile phone worth around Tk 10,000, Tk 14,000 in cash and other valuables, added the police official.
Abdullah, a restaurant employee in Motijheel, lives near the area where he was mugged, according to the police.
On the day of the incident, he was going to his village home in Cumilla.
The viral video of the incident sparked public outrage and calls for improved public security.
The video showed that Abdullah carrying a bag was walking through a narrow alley, and as he was about to pass a parked motorcycle with three riders on it, two of them wielding machetes swooped on him, snatching his bag.
One of his assailants also hit him with the blunt side of his machete.
After snatching as they were about to leave the area, Abdullah was seen hold onto the front wheel of the motorcycle, apparently pleading them to return his belongings.
Instead of paying heed to his desperate appeal, the muggers again hit him with the back of their machetes.
