
Politicians, academics and garment labour leaders on Friday at a rally in Dhaka called on the interim government to take steps to establish rights of the workers, especially the garment workers.
They also called on the interim government to implement the recommendations by the Labour Reform Commission for the welfare of workers of the country.
Bangladesh Garment Sramik Samhati organised the rally in front of the National Press Club presided over by its president garment labour leader Taslima Akhter.
Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed chief of Labour Reform Commission said at the rally that the rights of the workers would be established if the recommendations of the commission were implemented.
Zonayed Saki, chief coordinator of the Ganosamhati Andolan said that for democratic transition of the country there was no alternative but to establish rights of the workers.
Jahangirnagar University teacher Hasan Ashraf demanded formulation of a democratic labour law so that the workers could enjoy their rights in their workplaces.
Taslima Akhter demanded implementation of the 10-point demand of their organisation including implementation of the recommendations by the Labour Reform Commission, stopping of job cuts in garment factories, introducing a rationing system for garment workers at cheaper prices, giving 10 months maternity leave for the female garment workers, introduction of free trade unionism and holding trial of the killers who killed people during the student-led mass uprising.
Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, general secretary of the organisation called on the interim government and garment factory owners to pay the wages and festival allowances of the workers before forthcoming Eid-ul Azha.
Central leaders of the organisation Anjan Das, Nurul Islam, Alif Dewan and others spoke at the rally.
The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
