A man suspected of being involved in theft was beaten to death at Jangalia of Mohammadpur in Magura on Tuesday.
The victim was Israfil, 40, son of Atiyar Rahman, of the village.
The Mohammadpur police officer-in-charge Abdur Rahman said that some villagers had dragged Israfil out of his house around 6:30am and beat him up suspecting that he had stolen three mobiles worth Tk 1,600, leaving him injured.
The police rescued him and sent him to Mohammadpur upazila health complex, where he died from his injuries.
The body was sent for an post-mortem examination.
The polcie said that a murder case had been filed.
