About 67 per cent of outstanding bills of Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited in Barishal division are owed to government offices.

The rest of the outstanding amount is owed to individuals.

A total of 420 cases are currently ongoing against arrears against outstanding bills.

Due to the lack of a provision for fines, the task of recovering the outstanding bills is limited to serving notices on the government offices.

BTCL divisional general manager Tariqul Islam Khan said, ‘The current arrears with the customers are long-standing.’

He said that there should be a provision to fine government offices for not paying bills.

BTCL Barishal office says that the total arrears against 11,961 connections in six districts of the Barishal division are nearly 2.32 crore.

Of the amount, Tk 1.55 crore is outstanding with government institutions.
