Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Ishraque Hossain on Thursday afternoon postponed the ongoing protests over his mayoral oath, a few hours after the High Court in an order cleared the way for him to take oath as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation.
He made the announcement around 4:30pm on Kakrail Mosque Road near Jamuna Guest House — the official residence of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus — after consulting with party leaders.
‘Following the High Court order, our party has decided to postpone the protest for the time being. We will observe the government’s actions over the next 24 to 48 hours, and the next course of action will be determined accordingly,’ he said.
The High Court on Thursday cleared the way for Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Ishraque Hossain to take oath as mayor of the Dhaka South City Corporation, rejecting a writ petition that challenged the legality of his appointment.
He also announced that if there was any delay in holding his oath-taking ceremony as Dhaka South City Corporation mayor, his supporters would return to the streets again.
Earlier, on his verified Facebook page around 1:00 pm, Ishraque wrote, ‘The protest will continue until we hear the news of the resignation of the two student representative advisers.’
He demanded resignation of local government, rural development and co-operatives affairs adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain and information and broadcasting affairs adviser Md Mahfuj Alam alleging that the advisers had been working for a newly formed political party.
