At least one day labourer was killed while demolishing a wall at Lohagara upazila in Chattogram early Saturday.

The deceased is Ali Mia, 50, son of the late Abdul Azim.


The incident took place at around 9:00am on the day in the Haridar Ghona area of Barahatia union of Lohagara.

Gobinda Chandra Das, sub-inspector of the Lohagara police, said that while demolishing a semi-pucca house, part of the wall collapsed onto Ali Mia. Locals took him to a nearby private hospital where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

At least five construction workers, meanwhile, were injured when a section of an under-construction gate at the Chattogram zoo collapsed on Saturday.

Confirming the incident, Khan Khalilur Rahman, senior station officer of the Agrabad fire service in Chattogram, said that the gate collapsed at around midnight at the main entrance to the zoo in the Foy鈥檚 Lake area in the city.

The upper portion of the gate, which was under construction, suddenly gave way, injuring five workers, the officer said.

The injured are Arman, 30, Sohel, 23, Rony, 20, Hridoy, 20, and Rakib, 19.

All of them were taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment.

The damage from the gate collapse was estimated at around Tk 10 lakh, said Khalilur Rahman.

Sub-inspector Nurul Alam Ashiq of the CMCH police outpost said that the injured workers were currently receiving treatment in the hospital鈥檚 casualty ward.
