
A suspected member of the Kuki-Chin National Front, who was in custody at Chattogram Central Jail, died at Chattogram Medical College Hospital’s One-Stop Emergency Care Unit Thursday morning.
The deceased, Lal Fleng King Bom, 29, is a son of Lam Min Lian Bom of Bethai Para under Ruma upazila in Bandarban.
Jailor Md Masud Hassan Jewel of Chattogram Central Jail said that Lal Fleng complained of chest pain at around 8:00am in the jail and he was initially attended by the jail’s in-house medical officer.
‘As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to CMCH. The physicians there declared him dead at around 9:40am,’ the jailor said.
He said that the physicians primarily assumed that he died of a heart attack.
On April 9, 2024, Lal Fleng was arrested for his alleged involvement in a series of armed robberies and abductions carried out allegedly by the KNF in Ruma and Thanchi upazilas of Bandarban district on April 2 and April 3, 2024, according to jail officials.Â
The incidents included the looting of banks and the abduction of a bank manager.
He was shifted to Chattogram Central Jail on June 26, 2024 and was facing at least four cases, Jail officials said.
Jail officials said that another detained KNF suspect, Sangmoy Bawm, 55, reportedly critically ill, had been undergoing treatment at the CMCH for the past one and a half months. Sangmoy is now in critical condition and cannot take food.
