At least eight leaders of the National Citizen Party and Students Against Discrimination were injured as they came under attack early Thursday at a lead factory in the Goailbari Bazar area under Ashulia police station, on the outskirts of Bangladesh capital Dhaka.
The incident occurred at about 12:30am on Thursday when the leaders and activists asked to seal off a lead factory, alleging that it was illegal, according to the police.
Ashulia police station inspector (investigation) Kamal Hossain said that a team of Ashulia police led by the officer-in-charge rescued the NCP and SAD leaders at about 2:00am.
‘We have rescued them and admitted them to several hospitals, including the Upazila Health Complex and Enam Medical College Hospital,’ he added.
NCP’s labour wing central organiser Rifat Ahmed, 27, SAD Savar unit joint member secretary Tauhidul Islam, 23, and senior assistant-chief organiser Hridoy Hasan, 24, are among the injured ones.
Other injured people are SAD’s Savar upazila unit joint convener Obaidul Islam, 25, spokesperson Al-Masum, 25, member Fahadul Islam, 29, City University unit convener Syed Emon, 24 and member secretary Tawhid Ahemd, 24.
NCP labour wing central convener Mazharul Islam said that they went to roam around the area and found a smell of lead.
‘They took a video of the illegal factory and informed the Ashulia OC about the matter. They also said that they would send it to the deputy commissioner and upazila nirbahi officer. They faced attack when they had been leaving the place,’ said Mazharul.
He said that they were processing to file a case in this connection.
