A former leader of the outlawed Purba Banglar Sarbahara Party was allegedly shot and hacked to death by unidentified miscreants in Koladi village of Bhandara union in Pabna early Tuesday.

The deceased, Babul Sheikh, also known as Laga Babu, 40, a resident of Rampur village and was a former regional leader of the party, according to police and local people.

The incident took place at about 1:00am on Tuesday in Bijoy Rampur village of the upazila, said Abdus Salam, officer-in-charge of the Pabna police station.

Babul had been living a normal life since surrendering at the Pabna stadium during the Awami League government in 2017, the OC said, adding that it was initially believed that he was killed due to internal party disputes.

Police and locals said that Babul was returning home after leaving a tea shop at the market of Rampur village.

As soon as he reached the mango orchard near the tea shop, miscreants attacked him and stabbed Babul Sheikh with a machete and shot him to death on the spot.

Later, locals rescued him and took him to Pabna General Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead on arrival.

Pabana OC Abdus Salam said that the body was sent to the Pabna General Hospital morgue for autopsy on Tuesday morning.

There were three murder cases against him with Pabna and Ataikula police stations, added the police officer.
