The police have arrested six Awami League leaders, including two public representatives, in connection with the murder of four students in the July uprising in the past year.

The arrested were Abu Naser Babu, suspended councillor of Raipur municipality Ward 1 and vice-president of the municipality AL; Abdullah Al Mamun, Sonapur union’s Ward  9 member under the same upazila and joint convener of the upazila Swechchhasebak League; Monirul Basar Milon, Ichapur union unit president of the banned Chhatra League under Ramganj; Kamal Hossain, a Swechchhasebak League leader from the same union; Nur Hossain, an AL leader from Chandipur union; and another AL leader Mishkat Hossain.


They were arrested from different locations in Chattogram, Ramganj and Raipur early Tuesday and were later sent to jail following a court order, said officers-in-charge Md Nizam Uddin Bhuiyan of Raipur police station and Abul Basar of Ramganj police station.

The police said that leaders and activists from the Awami League, Juba League, and Chhatra League attacked and opened fire on protesting students in the July uprising in Lakshmipur, Raipur and Ramganj and killed four students and injured hundreds students on August 4, 2024.

Multiple cases were filed in connection with the incidents. So far, a total of 230 people have been arrested in this regard.
