
Myanmar’s rebel armed group Arakan Army on Monday abducted three Bangladeshi fishermen, while injured two others by shooting them in separate incidents on the Naf River in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
Three fishermen, namely Siddik Hossain, 27, Robiul Alam, 27, and Mahmud Hossain, 30, were abducted by the Arakan Army when they went for fishing on the Naf in Leda area of Nhila union under Teknaf on Monday afternoon, said Teknaf upazila nirbahi officer Sk Ahsan Uddin.
‘Three fishermen entered into Myanmar territory illegally while catching fish. We came to know from the local people about their abduction by the Arakan Army who came on boat,’ the UNO said.
In another incident in the morning, three fishermen went to fishing beyond Bangladesh territory in Jaliapra area on the Naf. Two of them, Mohammad Hossain and Md Hedayet Ullah, both from the upazila’s Shah Porir Dwip, sustained injuries from bullets fired by the Arakan Army, said UNO Ahsan Uddin.
‘Both the injured have been admitted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital,’ he added.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Ashikur Rahman, commanding officer of the Border Guard Bangladesh 2 Battalion in Teknaf, said that the fishermen went to fishing on the river although both the Bangladesh government and Arakan Army had banned fishing on the river in the Bangladesh territory and Arakan side of the Myanmar territory respectively. Â
‘We have warned fishermen asking them not to go to fishing crossing the border. But they didn’t pay heed,’ he added.
He said that they were injured by pellets but not lethal bullets.
