
Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh rescued 14 Bangladeshi human trafficking victims from traffickers in the Uttar Lombori area of Teknaf Sadar union in Cox’s Bazar on Saturday night.
They were abducted by human traffickers from different areas of the country for collecting ransom and trafficking them to Malaysia and Indonesia by sea, according to BGB officials.
BGB 2 Battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Md Ashikur Rahman said that they were detained by the human trafficking ring leader Md Saiful Islam, 39, and the BGB team rescued the 14 abducted Bangladeshis from a secret spot at about 11:30pm on Saturday.
‘Traffickers detained them in a remote area after abduction from Teknaf and Marine drive areas at different times,’ Ashikur said, adding thatÌý the traffickers demanded ransom from victim families and tortured them.
He said that they were conducting special drives to detain the traffickers and the process for handing over victims was under way.
The BGB said that they conducted a raid to arrest human trafficking ring leader Saiful on April 24 while trafficking people from Myanmar to Bangladesh by sea but Saiful managed to flee the scene.
A case was filed against Saiful with the Teknaf police station over the allegation of human trafficking and drug peddling on April 24.
