
At least 21 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its front organisations were arrested from different places in the capital Dhaka and Feni in 24 hours between Thursday morning and Friday morning.
The police headquarters in a press release on Friday said that 1,673 individuals were arrested between 6:00am on Thursday and 6:00am on Friday across the country.
In Dhaka, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch arrested five leaders and activists of the AL and its front organisations from different places in the city, said a press release issued on Friday.
The arrested are Md Ramzan Ali Situ, 47, vice-president of AL’s Pallabi thana unit, Md Alamgir, 35, vice-president of Swecchasebak League’s Mohammadpur thana unit, Md Rasel also known as Al Jobayer, 30, organising secretary of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Gulshan thana unit, Mehedi Hasan, 45, general secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan Ward No 66 Juba League, and Md Abdul Quader, 52, AL-nominated 16th Dhamghar union chairman in Cumilla.
The DMP press release said that all arrested were involved in destabilising the country by disrupting law and order and in creating panic among the public by holding flash processions in various parts of the capital.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Feni reported that 16 leaders and activists of the AL and its affiliated organisations, including two who participated in a flash rally under the AL banner, were arrested in raids conducted in different places in the district.
The arrestees included Daganbhuiyan upazila AL president AKM Kamal Uddin, 75, Md Sohel, 49, Rabiul Islam Rafi, 20, SM Abdus Sattar, 73, and others.
Among the 1,673 individuals arrested across the country, 1,175 were arrested in different cases and warrants.
The PHQ in its press release also said 494 individuals were arrested for other reasons.
