The government on Thursday again extended the magistracy power granted to the armed forces’ commissioned officers of the rank of captain, its equivalent, or above for another 60 days.
According to a circular issued by the public administration ministry, the officers will exercise special magistracy power for 60 more days from May 14.
The magistracy power has also been extended for the officers on deputation in the Bangladesh Coast Guard and the Border Guard Bangladesh, it said. With the extension, it is the fifth time the government extended the magistracy power for the armed forces’ commissioned officers of the rank of captain or above.
These officers are empowered to take necessary legal action under several provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure, including sections 64, 65, 83, 84, 86, 95(2), 100, 105, 107, 109, 110, 126, 127, 128, 130, 133 and 142.
The circular mentioned that the commissioned army officers with magistracy power would have jurisdiction across Bangladesh.
The special authority was first granted to the armed forces on September 17, 2024, due to deteriorating law and order situation after the fall of authoritarian Awami League government in a student-led mass uprising on August 5.
