The overall inflation rate eased for a fifth straight month in April, but it still remained high.

According to an update on the consumer price index released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics on Monday, the general inflation rate was 9.17 per cent in April.

In March, the rate was 9.35 per cent.

The overall inflation has been falling since December 2024. The inflation had gone up to 11.38 per cent in November.

Monday’s BBS update also showed that the non-food inflation was higher in both urban and rural areas than the food inflation rate.

The overall inflation is, however, higher in the urban area than that in the rural area.

The BBS recorded 9.59 per cent overall inflation in the urban area in the past month with the non-food inflation at 9.66 per cent.

The 12-month average inflation between May 2024 and April 2025 was calculated at 10.21 per cent, which was 10.26 per cent between April 2024 and March 2025.

A World Bank report in April warned that an additional three million people in Bangladesh were expected to fall into extreme  poverty in 2025 due to slowdown in economic activities and elevated inflation.

According to a Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies report released in March, the proportion of poor households has increased in the country against the backdrop of persistent inflationary pressure over the past three years.

The proportion of poor households increased to 26.43 per cent in 2024 compared with that of 24.73 per cent in 2022.
