Two students at Rajshahi University lodged a complaint against some of their senior fellows, accusing them of causing the complainants physical and mental harassment.
The victims, Abdullah Sheikh and Mezbaha Dewan, both first-year students of the accounting and information science department, lodged the complaint to the university proctor on Sunday afternoon, accusing Mokminul Islam Chowdhury, Golam Rabbi, Mahbub Hossain, Mehedi Hasan Mithu, Shah Poran, and Shahadat Hossain of 2022–23 academic session.
According to the complaint, the senior students summoned a group of junior students to the rooftop of the Rabindranath Tagore Academic Building on Saturday evening and subjected them to prolonged humiliation in front of over 50 other students.
‘For nearly five hours, the seniors abused us using vulgar and derogatory language. They then forced us to make indecent gestures and recite obscene poems,’ the complaint reads.
‘At one point, we were forced to act like dogs and simulate obscene sexual gestures. When we protested, the seniors hurled insults at us using swear words involving our parents,’ the victims wrote in the complaint, adding that Sunday’s experience had left them mentally shattered.
The accused denied the allegations.
Golam Rabbani, one of the accused students, said that on Saturday evening, they were celebrating their juniors’ recent victory of the BBA freshers tournament at the rooftop of Rabindranath Tagore Academic Building.
‘We arranged some food and gathered on the rooftop for music and chatting. No incident of ragging or harassment happened during the time,’ he added.
University proctor Professor Mahbubor Rahman said that they were investigating the allegations. ‘We will take necessary action against the accused students if they are found guilty,’ he added.
