Discussants at a programme in Dhaka on Monday emphasised the importance of preserving local genotypes from different parts of Bangladesh.

They made the urge at the lecture titled Pathotype Profiling, Pyramiding of Multiple Genes of Disease Resistance and Potential Use of Bio-Synthesised Nanoparticles in Rice Disease Management at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, said a press release.


Organised by Bangladesh Academy of Science, BAS vice-president Professor Zahurul Karim was present as chief guest at the event at the conference room of SAU administrative building.

Emphasising the importance of preserving local genotypes from different parts of the country, he said that science-based lectures and discussions should be increased in public universities. ‘Teachers and students of public universities should be more involved in research.’

Professor Md Abdul Latif, vice-chancellor of the SAU, was present as special guest at the event, which was moderated by the SAU agronomy department professor Mirza Hasanuzzaman.  Presided over by BAS fellow M Idris Ali chaired, Supreme Rice Research Centre technical director Md Abdul Latif was the keynote speaker the event.

Abdul Latif discussed various aspects of the application of nanotechnology, pathotype profiling and gene pyramiding methods in the management of bacterial blight, blast and tungro diseases of rice.

SAU vice-chancellor said that for effective and sustainable management of crop diseases and pests, coordination of the work of breeders, pathologists and entomologists of the country was necessary. ‘Without the coordinated activities of these three categories of agricultural scientists, effective management of crop diseases and pests is not possible.’

He also said about the application of nanotechnology in agriculture. ‘It is necessary to first confirm whether the use of nanoparticles will have a negative effect on the human body.’

Dean of post graduate studies Professor M Salauddin Mahmud Chowdhury, Professor FM Aminuzzaman, director of planning, development and works Professor Md Sarowar Hossain, director of institutional quality assurance cell Professor Md Rajab Ali, director of institute of seed technology Professor Nazneen Sultana, additional director of institutional quality assurance cell Professor Md Mahbubul Alam, director of plant conservation and landscaping Professor Md Humayun Kabir, director of outdoor activities department Professor Mohammad Jamshed Alam, professor of agricultural botany department Mohammad Mahbub Alam, teachers, students and invited scientists from various departments were present at the event.
