The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has withdrawn Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moktaruzzaman of Kalabagan Police Station and has closed two other sub-inspectors over allegations of unprofessional conduct.

The DMP took action against the three officers on late Sunday night, just hours after a formal complaint was lodged with the DMP Commissioner by Dr Abdul Wadud, owner of the Mini Zoo Phycamolli Centre.

The complaint alleged that the police officers demanded Tk 1 crore during an overnight raid at his residence-cum-mini zoo in the Hatirpool area of the capital on 29 April.

Deputy Commissioner of DMP Ramna Division, Masud Alam, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that OC Moktaruzzaman was withdrawn and Sub-Inspectors Mannan and Belal were closed on Sunday due to their unprofessional behaviour.

When asked whether the actions were related to the Hatirpool incident, Masud stated, ‘We have received several complaints against the OC, including the one concerning Hatirpool. He was withdrawn based on multiple allegations.’

He added that a new OC for Kalabagan Police Station had yet to be appointed.

According to reports, a group of young men stormed the Phycamolli Centre — a licensed mini zoo located in Hatirpool — and looted exotic birds while allegedly demanding extortion money during an overnight raid between the early hours of Tuesday and the following morning.

The incident reportedly occurred in the presence of police officers.

In a written complaint to the DMP Commissioner, Dr Abdul Wadud claimed that officers Belal and Mannan told him that he would not be taken to the police station if he paid Tk 1 crore.

‘Later, I gave them Tk 2 lakh. They then left behind three individuals in plain clothes, claiming to be Detective Branch members, to supervise me until the bank opened so I could pay the remainder,’ Dr Wadud alleged.

He further stated that between 15 and 20 individuals, accompanied by police officers led by SI Belal, forcibly entered his residence at around 1:30 am on 29 April. The occupants called the National Emergency Service at 999.

According to the complaint, two patrol teams from New Market and Shahbagh Police Stations arrived at the main road near his residence, but the Kalabagan OC, Moktaruzzaman, instructed them to leave the scene.
