Transparency International Bangladesh executive director Iftekharuzzaman on Sunday said that the security agencies in Bangladesh need radical reforms.

‘We don’t talk about an issue. The elephant in the room – secrete agencies. Don’t they need reform in Bangladesh,’ he asked.

At an event marking the World Press Freedom Day, 2025, he also said that these agencies were earlier used as the biggest weapon to violate the freedom of all by violating their jurisdiction.

Iftekharuzzaman said that only some people were changed in these agencies while the long term practices and system established there were yet to be changed.

‘It is not the responsibility of any security agency to control what a newspaper can publish and what it cannot,’ said Iftekharuzzaman, also the chief of Anti-Corruption Commission Reform Commission.

The event was jointly organised by the TIB, UNESCO Dhaka office and the embassy of Sweden in Bangladesh at the Midas Centre in the capital.
