The Dhaka Special Judge Court-6 on Sunday sentenced a former driver of the Directorate General of Health Services, Abdul Malek, to 13 years imprisonment for amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 1.50 crore and concealing the information of his wealth.

Judge Md Jakaria Hossain of the court handed down the verdict in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission on February 14, 2021, said ACC public prosecutor Asaduzzaman Rana.

Malek heard the verdict from the dock.

The court also set April 16 to deliver the verdict in another case filed against Malek and his wife Nargis Begum on the charge of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 1.10 crore.

Malek was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for amassing illegal wealth and three years more for concealing the information of his wealth.

The court also fined him Tk 2,00,000, and, in default, he will have to suffer one year more in jail.

The judge ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate Tk 1,50,31,810, the amount he amassed illegally, in favour of the state.

The same court framed charges against Malek on May 11, 2022 in the graft case. 16 prosecution witnesses testified against him before the court.

According to the case statement, Malek possessed movable and immovable wealth worth over Tk 1.5 crore, which he had amassed beyond his known sources of income.

He also provided false information in his wealth statement submitted to the ACC by hiding information of movable and immovable assets worth over Tk 93 lakh.

On February 14, 2021, the ACC filed a case against Malek on charges of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 1.50 crore.

On the same day, the ACC also filed another case against Malek and his wife Nargis Begum on charge of amassing illegal wealth worth around Tk 1.10 crore by Nargis beyond her known sources of income.

The ACC submitted two charge sheets to the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court on October 27, 2021.

A team of the Rapid Action Battalion arrested Malek during a drive in the Kamarpara area under Turag Police Station in Dhaka on September 20, 2020 and seized a foreign-made pistol, a magazine, five bullets, and Tk 1.5 lakh in fake currency.

Later, two cases – one for possessing arms and ammunition and the other for possessing fake currencies – were filed against him with Turag Police Station.

On September 20, 2021, Malek was sentenced to 30 years of rigorous imprisonment in a case filed on charges of possessing firearms and ammunition.
