At least three cases were filed against 5,000 people, including garment workers and trade union leaders over the workers’ unrest at Beximco Group factories at Kashimpur in Gazipur on Friday and early Thursday.

Kashimpur police station officer-in-charge Saiful Islam said that they had arrested so far 33 people and continued arrest drive against the perpetrators.

On January 22, several hundred workers of Beximco Group went to the street and vandalised vehicles, put fire on several others and collided with the police.

The workers also attacked nearby Grameen Fabrics and Fashions LTD and vandalised it.

The police said that Grameen Fabrics director Tarikul Islam filed a case over the incident.

Another case was filed by a bus owner Habibullah Akanda against unnamed 300 people for torching his bus.

Industrial police sub-inspector Rafiqel Islam also filed another case with the Kashimpur police station against 5,000 unnamed people for attacks on the police and obstructing the police in duty.

Over 42,000 workers of Beximco Group employed in 16 units in Gazipur have been demonstrating for reopening their factories.

The factories remained closed since August in the past year over the political changes in the country.
