Police recovered missing case dockets of a Chattogram court from a scrap shop in the city on Thursday and detained one individual in connection with the incident.
The detained Md Rasel, 23, works at a tea stall near the Chattogram court premises.
Kotwali police station recovered the dockets, packed in nine sacks, from the scrap shop on Satish Babu Lane in Patharghata, said Abdul Karim, officer-in-charge of the station.
The case dockets, totalling 1,991, went missing from the public prosecutor’s office of the Chattogram Metropolitan Court. A general diary was filed with Kotwali police station on January 5, prompting an investigation.
‘We detained Rasel on Wednesday from the Bou Bazar area in Bakalia. Based on his statement, we raided Mofiz’s scrap shop and recovered the missing documents Thursday morning,’ said OC Karim.
During questioning, Rasel claimed that he found the files abandoned on the court premises and assumed they were discarded. He collected the files over two days, packed them into sacks, and sold them to a scrap dealer for Tk 18 per kilogram, earning Tk 437 in total.
The files were reportedly taken between December 27 and 28, during the court’s vacation from December 13 to 31, 2024.
The PP office, located on the third floor of the court building in the Kotwali area, is adjacent to the courtrooms and judges’ chambers. While the premises are typically busy during the day, stricter security measures are enforced after office hours.
Authorities are investigating how the documents were removed from a secured area and are reviewing security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
