A female field worker of a microfinance organisation in Chattogram’s Boalkhali upazila on Saturday allegedly committed suicide due to mental distress at her workplace.
The police have recovered her body and a case has been filed against four officials of the organisation.
The incident took place on Saturday at the victim’s residence in Palpara of Kharandwip union in the upazila.
The deceased, identified as Shukla Dey Tikli, 38, was the wife of Sidul Pal.
She was employed as a field officer at Rupsha Sarbik Gram Unnayan Samabaya Samiti, a local microfinance organisation in Boalkhali’s Kanungopara area.Â
Boalkhali police officer-in-charge Golam Sarwar said, ‘She was found hanging in her kitchen with a scarf around her neck. Upon receiving information from her family, we recovered the body and sent it for autopsy.’
Her husband Sidul Pal filed a case on Sunday against four individuals, accusing them of provoking her to commit suicide, he added. Â Â
The accused are Kanungopara branch manager Kanchan Debnath, Patiya branch manager Palash Nath, and two other officials, Nandan and Chinu Biswas.Â
According to the case statement, Shukla joined the organisation in May 2023. Over the past few months, conflicts arose between her and colleagues over financial matters, including the collection of loan instalments. In November, a large portion of her monthly salary was deducted.Â
The case further alleges that Kanchan and the other accused harassed her regularly, subjected her to derogatory remarks, and ultimately transferred her to the Patiya branch. Unable to endure the mounting pressure of debt collection and abuse, Shukla took her own life.Â
On November 24, 2024, Shukla filed a written complaint with the Boalkhali upazila nirbahi officer, detailing an earlier incident of threat and harassment. According to the complaint, on October 19, while collecting loan instalments at Amuchia, some men surrounded her, accused her of wrongdoing and forced her to sign several blank stamps. They also recorded the incident on video, threatening her to release it on social media to tarnish her reputation.
