Dr Milon

Dr Milon Day will be observed across the country today, commemorating the 34th martyrdom anniversary of Shamsul Alam Khan Milon, a physician, on this day in 1990.

Milon, the then joint secretary of Bangladesh Medical Association, was killed by the henchmen of military junta HM Ershad near the Teacher-Student Centre of Dhaka University at the height of anti-autocracy movement.


The supreme sacrifice of Milon transformed the movement into a mass upsurge that prompted the fall of the autocratic regime paving the way for restoration of democratic process in the country.

Different political parties and socio-cultural and professional bodies have planned elaborate programmes to observe the day.

The programmes include placing wreaths and offering special prayers at the grave of Milon on the Dhaka Medical College campus and at Milon Smrity Chattar near TSC on the Dhaka University campus.

The Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal factions of JSD have chalked out programmes to observe the day.

Bangladesh Jasod will hold a discussion at the National Press Club at 4:00pm to mark the day. The party president Sharif Nurul Ambia is scheduled to chair the discussion.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party will also place wreaths at the grave of Milon and also at Milon Square near TSC in the morning.

The the Communist Party of Bangladesh, Ganatantra Mancha, Left Democratic Alliance, Socialist Party of Bangladesh, Ganosamhati Andolan,聽 Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh聽 and other left-leaning political parties and organisations have chalked out various programmes to mark the day.
