The police on Monday foiled Ahingsa Gana-Abhyutthan Bangladesh’s pre-announced rally for the formulation of a law to recover embezzled and laundered money and lending interest-free loans to people with little or no capital.
Law enforcement agencies said that they had information that the platform was going to have a big gathering in the city to create a chaotic situation as part of their plot against the interim government.Â
People from across the country filled with buses and microbuses started arriving on Dhaka University campus and Shahbagh area from early Monday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ramna Zone deputy commissioner Masud Alam said that the organisers told the people, mostly village people with low income, that they could get Tk 1 lakh to Tk 1 crore interest-free loans for joining the rally.
The platform had applied for permission for the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan, said the DC, adding that they did not gave permission but organisers forcefully tried to hold the rally at Shahbagh with an intention to paralyse the capital and make trouble to the government. Â
According to the police and university students, the platform registered people claiming that the organisers would recover embezzled money and provide interest-free loans.
A police official, requesting anonymity, stated, ‘These people have been cheated. They were charged registration fees of Tk 1,000 to Tk 2,000 per person, amounting to over Tk 10 crore in total. We are conducting operations against them.’
The official said that they returned around 200 buses and microbuses and took some people to custody for questioning. Â
The official also revealed that this fraudulent group has been operating since 2022 and has numerous cases filed against them across different districts.
Dhaka University proctor Saifuddin Ahmed told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that around 2:30am, the group first tried to enter the campus through Shahbagh and Doel Chattar, but a security guard prevented them to enter, the DU Correspondent reported.
But after 4:00am, a large number of buses entered together, making it difficult to control the situation.
He further said, ‘Later, our proctorial mobile team reached the scene at 4:30am. With the help of police and students, we were eventually able to convince the group to leave.’
The organisers lured general villagers from different parts of the country to gather here under false pretences.
Initially, 10-12 villagers were taken to custody for questioning but were later released, he said adding that four key organisers were in police custody.
Shahbag police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Khalid Mansoor said that filing of case against 19 was under progress.
Meanwhile, Ganasanghati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki in front of the police station told media that there was a misunderstanding as the platform was raising the demand for a long time to formulate a law to recover embezzled and laundered money and lending interest-free loans to people.
The platform announced the rally to press home the demand, said Saki, adding that he went to the police station to enquired about people detained there.Â
In Lakshmipur, law enforcers detained 11 people and seized 7 vehicles while coming towards Dhaka for the rally on Sunday night, reported United News of Bangladesh.
Ahingsa Gana-Abhyutthan announced that rally at a press conference held at the National Press Club on November 22.
Earlier, Ahingsa Gana-Abhyutthan Bangladesh held a rally at Shahbag to press home the same demand on August 18.
