
Dhaka University vice-chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan at an event in Dhaka emphasised that researchers, teachers, policy makers and all concerned must work together to deal with natural disasters conducting state-of-the-art research in a proper manner.
Bangladesh has several achievements in dealing with natural disasters. The young generation has to play an effective role in developing different strategies in disaster management, he said this while addressing as chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony of Disaster Hackathon 2.0 at the DU Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on Thursday.
He also emphasised on disaster management, use of science and technology, formation of research funds and new innovations.
The DU disaster science and climate resilience department, meteorology department, FourWarn Bangladesh, and Open Mapping Hub-Asia Pacific jointly organised the competition.
DU earth and environmental sciences faculty dean Professor Kazi Matin Uddin Ahmed, meteorological department chairperson Fatima Akhtar, Jahangirnagar University remote sensing and GIS institute director Professor Nurul Islam, Bangladesh Meteorological Department meteorologist Bazlur Rashid, Start Network CEO Christina Bennett and Open Mapping Hub-Asia Pacific regional director Nama Budhataki spoke as special guests at the award ceremony, which was presided over by Start Fund Bangladesh country manager Sajid Raihan.
Eighty four university level teams participated in this hackathon competition. Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology鈥檚 Team Sidr won the first place while the DU Team Sonderers got the second place and Team Relief Tech Squared got the third place, said a DU press release on Friday.
