A Jahangirnagar University teacher died on Friday morning after collapsing while on duty during vote counting for the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union elections, officials said.

Jannatul Ferdous, a lecturer at the Fine Arts department, fell ill at the entrance of the Senate Hall while serving as a polling officer at Pritilata Hall, according to Shamim Reza, head of the department.

She was rushed to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar but was declared dead on arrival.

‘She suddenly collapsed at the door during the counting of votes in the morning,’ Reza said.

Proctor AKM Rashidul Alam, who also serves as member secretary of the election commission, said vote counting for all halls could not be completed overnight due to the absence of polling agents and exhaustion among staff.

‘Counting for Pritilata Hall resumed this morning. She came with her colleagues to the centre and fell down at the entrance. An ambulance was arranged immediately, but we later learnt she had already passed away,’ Alam said.

He added that the incident cast a pall of grief across the campus, expressing condolences to the bereaved family.

The election commission said she was not on duty last night and came to join the duty on Friday morning from her residence.
