A Dhaka University official died on Friday morning after a lift collapsed in the Center for Advanced Research in Sciences building at Dhaka University.

The incident occurred at about 10:30am on the day.


The deceased, Muhammad Abdullah, was the senior assistant director for accounts at the Faculty of Fine Art.

Following the accident, the DU authorities rushed him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.

Later, he died at the hospital while undergoing聽 treatment there in the afternoon.

The vice-chancellor of the university, professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, expressed his deep sorrow at Mohammad Abdullah鈥檚 death.

Immediately after the accident, the vice-chancellor went to the DMCH to inquire about Abdullah鈥檚 condition and treatment.

Professor Azaharul Islam Sheikh, the dean of the Faculty of Fine Art, proctor associate professor Saifuddin Ahmed, and other faculty members and officials were present during the VC鈥檚 visit.

The vice-chancellor has, meanwhile, formed a probe committee to investigate the reasons for the accident.

This five-member committee was led by professor Upama Kabir, dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology.

The other members included assistant proctor Dr Abu Asad Chowdhury, a representative from the director of the Center for Advanced Research in Sciences, and the chief engineer of the university.

Sheikh Ayub Ali, deputy registrar of the university, will act as the member secretary to the probe body.

The committee has been asked to submit its report in seven working days.
