
A Sunamganj court on Wednesday granted bail to former planning minister MA Mannan in a case filed for alleged attack on a rally of the anti-quota movement.
On the day, Rapid Action Battalion arrested former lawmaker for Kishoreganj-2 constituency Sohrab Uddin and a Gaibandha court sent former lawmaker from Gaibandha-2 constituency Mahbub Ara Begum Gini to jail after rejecting their bail petition.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Sylhet reported that Sunamgangj district and sessions’ court judge Hemayet Uddin passed the bail order for Mannan.
MA Mannan’s lawyer Abdul Hamid confirmed the court order and said that the court passed the order considering the physical condition of the petitioner.
Earlier in the morning, the judge was forced to adjourn the hearing on the bail petition in the face of protest of the plaintiff’s lawyers, he said.
On September 2, a youth named Hafiz Ahmad of Doarabazar upazila in Sunamganj filed a case against more than 60 people, including Mannan, on charge of launching an attack on a rally of anti-quota movement.
Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital authorities on Tuesday afternoon formed a six-member committee led by the Sylhet Osmani Medical College principal Shishir Ranjan Chakrabarty for better treatment of Mannan, the hospital’s deputy director Soumitra Chakrabary said.
He said that Mannan was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday morning under police custody after he was shifted from Sunamganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Meanwhile, RAB arrested Sohrab Uddin from Diabari area in Dhaka’s Uttara in connection with charges related to ordering attacks on students and the public during anti-quota protests, United News of Bangladesh reported.
He was also accused of financing these violent acts, RAB media officer ASP Imran Khan said on Wednesday.
A total of four cases were filed against Sohrab with the Kishoreganj and Pakundia police stations.
Meanwhile, Gaibandha’s additional chief judicial magistrate Md Abdul Matin sent Mahbub Ara Begum Gini to jail after rejecting her bail petition and 10-day remand prayer.
Rejecting the remand and bail prayers, the court sent the former lawmaker to jail in a case filed over the vandalism and arson at the BNP office.
Earlier on September 30, detectives arrested her from a residence in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area.
