Two persons were arrested on Friday over the lynching of a national minority youth, Anik Kumar Chakma, during sectarian violence in Khagrachari and Rangamati districts under Chattogram Hill Tract region in Bangladesh on September 20.

Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge Md Sahed Uddin said that police arrested Md Rubel from Khagrachari’s Manikchari upazila while Abrar was arrested from Rangamati.


‘We produced them before the court on Friday. The court sent them to jail,’ he said, adding that Rubel gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Anik, a student of Karnaphuli Degree College in Kapai, was beaten to death by a group of Bengali people during the sectarian violence at Kalindipur area in Rangamati town on September 20.

Anik’s father Adar Sen Chakma filed a murder case with Kotwali police dtation on September 22.

Sectarian violence erupted at Dighinala on September 19 after a Bengali man, Mohammad Mamun, was rumoured to be beaten to death by national minority people in Khagrachari town on September 18.

The violence soon spread from Dighinala to Khagrachari town on the sane day and in Rangmati on September 20.

Four national minority people were killed and more than a hundred were injured on the violence.

Several houses, businesses and at least three Buddhist temples were vandalised and set on fire in Rangamati and Khagrachari.
