A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed former secretary of the Election Commission (EC) Secretariat and home ministry Md Jahangir Alam on five-day remand in connection with a case filed over the killing of a teenager Abdul Motalib during student-led mass uprising on August 4.

Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka, Belal Hossain passed the order in the case as Jahangir was turned into the court with a 10-day remand prayer following his arrest from the city’s Gulshan area on the day.  


Motalib, 14, was shot dead while he was taking part in the student-led mass uprising in Dhanmondi, Dhaka on August 4.

His father Abdul Matin later filed a murder case against 176 persons, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and the arrestee Jahangir Alam at Dhanmondi police station.

About Jahangir’s arrest, Rezaul Karim Mallick, additional commissioner of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police told BSS that they arrested the former secretary of the security service division of the home ministry and EC Secretariat Jahangir Alam from the city’s Gulshan area around 11:30am on Tuesday.

Mentioning that a number of criminal cases have been filed against Jahangir with different police stations, he said, ‘We have so far got 10 cases against him and the number of cases may increase.’
