Barishal University has cancelled the studentship of two Bangladesh Chhatra League activists and suspended another activist on allegation of torturing a student.

University registrar Monirul Islam confirmed the matter on Monday afternoon.

The BU registrar said that Central Disciplinary Committee of the university  recommended cancelation of the studentship of two Chhatra League activists — Tanjidul Haque Manju and Shihab Uddin Patwari Rifat — of the English department studying under 2018-19 academic year, for allegedly torturing Mukul Ahmed of the same department of 2020-21 academic year.

The committee also suspended studentship of Ahad Khan Rafi of 2020-21 academic year for one academic year in the same incident.

The recommendations were made at a meeting of the disciplinary committee held on Sunday night. Notification will be issued if it is approved by the BU syndicate, the BU registrar office added.

It is to be noted that on October 14, 2023, Mukul Ahmed was tortured by Chhatra League activists.

The victim was brutally tortured overnight in room 4018 of Bangabandhu Hall of the university. Although a written complaint was filed after the incident, the decision was suppressed until now.
