The Dhaka South and North city corporations claimed that they had cleared ‘cent per cent’ waste generated from animal sacrifices from the total 129 wards on Eid day and the following day.
On Wednesday, cleaning activities continued through the evening for the third day running in areas, including Jurain, Banasree, Jatrabari and Old Dhaka, where some of the residents sacrificed animals on the day.
Besides, waste removal from several cattle markets under the DNCC was still going on as of 7:00pm Wednesday. This year the Dhaka north city authorities set up nine cattle markets, including the permanent one at Gabtoli,
DNCC chief executive officer Mir Khairul Alam said that animal sacrifices were still going on here and there in the city on the third day of Eid.Â
‘Cleaners are removing the waste as soon as the animals are sacrificed. Additionally, cleaning activities in cattle markets are expected to be completed by tonight (Wednesday),’ he added. Â
The DNCC said in press releases that it had removed a total of 20,105 tonnes of animal waste in 4,177 trips, starting from 2:00pm on Monday the day of Eid-ul-Azha till 5:00pm on Wednesday.
The DSCC in a press release said that it had removed 23,958 tonnes of animal waste in 5,319 trips by 6:00pm on Wednesday.
The DSCC release also said that ‘cent per cent waste removal was completed from all its 11 cattle markets by 6:07pm’.
A DNCC press release said that it had removed waste from all its 54 wards within six hours on Eid day, fulfilling the word given by North city mayor Atiqul Islam.
Meanwhile, a separate DSCC press release said that on Eid day it had finished removal of the waste from its 75 wards within 10 hours, completing the work at 12:15am on Tuesday, 14 hours ahead of DSCC mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh’s promised timeline of 24 hours.
However, waste from sacrificial animals remained unattended in the Khalpar area of South Banasree from Eid day till Wednesday morning due to a jurisdictional dispute between the two city authorities.Â
DSCC public relations officer Abu Naser said, ‘Although the area falls under the DNCC, for the sake of the people, we have started removing the waste from about midday today (Wednesday).’Â
Contradicting Abu Naser’s claim, the DNCC chief executive officer said that the area falls under the DSCC.
Dhaka South mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and North mayor Atiqul Islam inaugurated the waste removal work in separate programmes at about 2:00pm on Eid day.
More than 19,500 cleaners were deployed, with 10,257 working in areas under the DSCC and 9,337 in areas under the DNCC. Â
