The prices of essential commodities, including vegetables and eggs, skyrocketed on the kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka on Sunday.

Traders said that transports of the commodities had remained almost suspended since July 17 amid unrests centring quota reform movement across the country.


The government imposed a curfew across the country from midnight past Friday as at least 110 people were killed and several thousand others were injured till Friday in clashes across the country in quota reform protests, starting from July 16.

Due to a lack of transports, the supply of vegetables almost halved and the prices doubled on both wholesale and retail markets in the city, traders said.

They said that the stock of rice and eggs remained satisfactory on the wholesale markets, but the supply of the items from the store houses had remained halted.

They said that the stock of eggs ran out in retail shops in some areas in the capital.

The prices of most of the vegetables doubled in past five days in the city’s kitchen markets.

Aubergine sold for Tk 120-150 a kilogram, papaya for Tk 70–80 a kilogram, bitter gourd for Tk 100 a kilogram, gourds for Tk 100 apiece, okra for Tk 80-90 a kilogram, pointed gourd for Tk 70-80 a kilogram, tomato for Tk 250-300 a kilogram and carrot for Tk 220-260 a kilogram on Sunday.

The prices of green chillies nearly tripled in past five days and the item sold for Tk 400-500 a kilogram in the city on the day.

The price of eggs increased by Tk 10 a hali (four pieces) in past three days and the items sold for Tk 55-60 a hali in the city on Sunday.

Md Maksud, a retail trader in the Mohammadpur area in the capital, said that there was stock of eggs in the warehouses of the wholesalers, but the supply had remained suspend for the past few days due to the unrest situation.

The prices of onions remained high and the local variety of onions sold for Tk 120-130 a kilogram while the imported variety sold for Tk 130 a kilogram in the city markets.

The prices of garlic also remained high and its local variety sold for Tk 240-250 a kilogram while the imported variety sold for Tk 220-230 a kilogram on Sunday.

The prices of broiler chicken sold for Tk 180-190 a kilogram while locally bred hens sold for Tk 600–700 a kilogram on the day.

Sonalika variety of chicken sold for Tk 350–380 a kilogram in the capital on Sunday.
