A female student of Rajshahi University died after reportedly drowning while swimming in the campus pool on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Sayma Hossain, a student at the sociology department. She hailed from Kushtia district.

Confirming the incident, university’s proctor Professor Mahbubur Rahman said that Sayma was swimming in the pool in the afternoon when she suddenly drowned. She was rescued and rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where doctors on emergency declared her dead, he added.

Rokhsana Begum Tuktuki, director of the university physical education department, said that Sayma was practicing in the swimming pool for a swimming competition.

‘After completing two rounds, she suddenly suffered a heart attack. She was first taken to the university medical centre and then to RMCH, where doctors pronounced her dead. Such a death is truly unbearable,’ she said.

Shankar K Biswas, spokesperson of RMCH said that a student was brought to the hospital after drowning. ‘She was declared dead upon arrival.

The exact cause of death cannot be confirmed without a post-mortem,’ he said, adding that the body has been sent to the morgue for autopsy.
